NMC ternary cathode material (LiNixMnyCozO₂, x y z = 1, abbreviated as NMC) is a type of layered lithium-ion battery cathode nanomaterial composed of an ordered combination of three transition metal elements—nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co)—with lithium (Li) and oxygen (O). It is a key functional material for high-energy-density lithium batteries. Its core structure is an α-NaFeO₂-type layered oxide (R-3m space group), where lithium ions and transition metal ions are arranged in separate layers. The Ni, Mn, and Co are adjusted in different molar ratios (typically NMC111 [x=y=z=1/3], NMC622 [x=0.6, y=0.2, z=0.2], NMC811 [x=0.8, y=0.1, z=0.1]) to regulate the overall performance of the material.
