The CAM (ceric ammonium molybdate) developer is a commonly used broad-spectrum developer in organic TLC. It undergoes oxidation-reduction reaction, and reducing substances show dark blue spots.
I. Preparation Method (Common Formula)
Formula One (General): 9.6 g of ammonium molybdate, 0.4 g of cerium sulfate, add 200 mL of 10% sulfuric acid aqueous solution, stir until completely dissolved, obtain an extremely pale yellow solution, store in a brown bottle and keep sealed.
Formula Two (Common): 235 mL distilled water + 12 g ammonium molybdate + 0.5 g cerium ammonium molybdate + 15 mL concentrated sulfuric acid, mix well and keep ready.
Usage: After spraying the plate and heating (100–120℃), the reducing substances show dark blue spots on a white background.
II. Colorable Compounds (Broad-spectrum, Focusing on Reductivity)
Alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, esters, carboxylic acids and other oxygen-containing functional group compounds.
Amines, amides, amino acids, heterocycles and other nitrogen-containing compounds.
Alkenes, alkynes, aromatic hydrocarbons and other unsaturated hydrocarbons and electron-rich systems.
Most organic small molecules, natural products, drug intermediates (especially applicable when there is no ultraviolet absorption).
